About

The inspirational Elizabeth Akampereza recognised the impact of period poverty on girls and women. She created a team of like minded young health professionals and began to provide education to small groups in schools. The lack of access to sustainable menstrual health products and accurate information on various women's health issues drove her to seek ways to make long-term changes. Feminella Africa Ltd was founded by the commitment and dedication of Elizabeth. Here is her story:

I am Elizabeth Akampereza a female Ugandan.

Growing up in a third world country more over in a community where the most pressing burdens have always been directed to women such as period poverty, teenage pregancies to mention but a few became a Great concern to me as a woman as well as a doctor to be.

With all these concerns, women have always been marginalized and at the end of the Day they become victims of early child marriages and gender based violence.

There has always been a a burning desire within me to change the situation in My community. We can't deny the fact that once you empower a woman, you empower a Nation.

My passion for empowering women has grown over the years and that is how I got to work with Little Angels Uganda. It has been an experience of a life time that I got a chance to interact with the girls to get to know more about their concerns.

It is then that it came to my notice that period poverty is one of the challenges that these school girls have to put up with. It affects their studies heavily whereby they absent from school once in their periods and this affects their performance.

With my friend and colleague Dr Rozan Komuhangi, we organized menstrual health talks as well as provided a few hygiene materials to the girls. Our aim was to empower them and help them understand how to cope up with the changes that come up as they are growing up.

Much as we were giving them an education, it wasn't enough. There was still need to find a long lasting solution and that is teaching the girls to make their own reusable sanitary pads. That way, they will be able to teach their friends, families and communities as a way of paying it forward. This way, we shall ably eradicate period poverty with its associated challenges.

In all this situation, God answered our prayer through Mr. Duncan who connected us to Mrs. Sonia Betram. It's amazing that she had the same desire and we all connected instantly. After sharing our dreams and inspirations, the rest is history. This is how we birthed Feminella Africa.
